Cuba Has Broad Participation at 39th UNESCO Conference

Paris - Cuba has had a broad participation at the 39th General Conference of UNESCO with an exhibition of the progress made in priority sectors such as Education and Higher Education.

First Deputy Education Minister, Cira Piñeiro, and First Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Martha del Carmen Mesa, told Prensa Latina about the intense activity of the Cuban representation that attends this event of that United Nations organization.

According to Piñeiro, in several forums of the conclave 'we are showing our experience with a free, massive, inclusive and totally budgeted education by the State, which assumes the issue as a prioritized responsibility'.

Piñeiro participated yesterday in a Thematic Panel in which she explained that public spending on education represents 23 percent of the approved proposal for the budgeted activity.

This is part of 'the great efforts the country does to maintain high indicators in education, and this is possible thanks to the country's political will and the commitment of our teachers,' she said.

On the other hand, Mesa said that during the Conference, 'we are presenting the results obtained in university education, contributions and work objectives towards the future.'

According to the first deputy minister of higher education, 'we expect to dedicate our actions and research to contribute to the objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which will also be the motto of the 2018 international event, which we organize in Cuba.'

She participated in a forum aimed at celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of UNESCO Chairs, in which the Caribbean nation was a pioneer because it had its first chair shortly after the launch of the initiative.

Mesa highlighted the value of Unesco's work, which emerged in 1945 to promote peace in the world through education, science, culture and communication.
