Havana -The World Food Program (WFP) has implemented four new tools to reduce the risks of food security in the face of the drought in eastern Cuba, the UN entity reported.

The initiatives will be put into practice experimentally in 20 municipalities until the month of January of next year, according to the press release issued here.

A 'check-list' type tool will allow farmers to identify the vulnerabilities of their farm or cooperative in the face of a drought and obtain information on what remains to be done to mitigate its impact.

Another instrument is one that improves surveillance, information and early risk reduction actions.

Also, specialists in meteorology and hydrological services will monitor drought events and issue a complete information on their evolution.

The WFP communiqué adds that the methodologies were designed during one year by more than 200 specialists, government authorities, journalists, and farmers from the eastern provinces of the country, with support from WFP and UNDP.

The impact of the drought on food production and livestock are remarkable, with negative consequences on food and nutrition security.

In this regard, the Policy and Program Officer of the PMA office in Cuba, Gabriela Hernández, indicated that the collective construction of tools for the integral management of the drought in the East of Cuba could contribute to other territories of the country.

Our willingness is to accompany this process, as it benefits food and nutrition security, especially in social protection programs, she added.
