Medical Team Work Recognized in Case of Air Disaster in Cuba

Havana -The forensic expert in Legal Medicine, Jorge Gonzalez, considered today as positive the work of the medical team in charge of attending the air disaster which occurred in Cuba on May 18th.

During the first debate of the permanent commission of Health and Sport of the National Assembly of People's Power (parliament), the Cuban forensic expert recognized the immediate response of the people to the event, 'their solidarity and human action'.

Studies around the world show disasters bring out the worst in human beings, and in fact the opposite is true, said Gonzalez, principal chief and active participant in the discovery of the remains of Ernesto Che Guevara and his fellow guerrillas in Bolivia, considered a scientific feat.

Gonzalez also stressed that in just eight days, all the fatal victims of the accident were recognized, while stressing the mission of forensic experts is not to save lives, but their work is also important in the mourning process for families.

At the first extraordinary session of the 9th Legislature of the unicameral parliament on Saturday, lawmakers observed a minute's silence to remember those killed in the tragedy involving a Boeing 737-200 rented by Cubana de Aviacion.

On board the aircraft, which crashed shortly after taking off from the Jose Marti International Airport, were 113 people, 102 Cubans, seven Mexicans (including the six crew members), two Argentines and two Saharawis living on the island.

Three women survived the plane crash, but two of them died after several days of multidisciplinary medical care due to severe injuries.

The only survivor is in critical condition, with a probability of complications and a reserved prognosis.

The President of the Assembly, Esteban Lazo, reminded all the Cuban people united in deep sorrow and expressed their sincere condolences to the families and friends of the Cuban and foreign victims.

Lazo also expressed his appreciation for the expressions of solidarity which came from all over the world, in particular the messages of encouragement from parliaments, parliamentary friendship groups and legislators.
