History of the Eduardo Abela Plastic Arts Hall

The Eduardo Abela Salon honors a plastic artist, born in San Antonio de los Baños. Its headquarters is located in the Provincial Center that bears the name of the creator and where the Hall is held at that level. In 2001, it was decided to change its name and call it Salón Habana; but in 2011, as a result of the new Political-Administrative Division, it retakes its initial name Eduardo Abela Hall, which it had kept for 18 years.
The first Salon ''Eduardo Abela" was held in 1984, in the Eduardo Abela Gallery, -which is not currently the Provincial Center-, located in the Spanish Casino. It was a competition between comedians. In this same place, the second edition was held in September 1986.
In 1987 the Provincial and Methodological Center was inaugurated, at 58th Street No. 3710, between 37 and 39, in San Antonio de los Baños. On the occasion of the Fifth Biennial of Humor, the third edition takes place in September. Since then, it was held every year, interrupted only in 1992, as a result of the crisis of the Special Period. Then, it continued until 2009, when the 24th edition was held and it was decided to give it the category of Biennial as well as the rest of the provincial salons of the country. This year marks an important and closed date: the 25th anniversary of its creation.
For 25 years, prominent personalities of the plastic arts, -members of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and of the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS)-, have participated in the Salon; as well as renowned specialists and art critics from the Visual Arts Development Center and the National Council of Plastic Arts.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary, the Art Center made different and varied activities. The most awarded artists and those with the greatest participation during the 25 editions received a well-deserved tribute. Also, there was a collective exhibition with these artists, which was extended to the rest of the galleries in the province. Also, the artists who have participated in our Salons and who are no longer part of the province were recognized.
