The Estudiantina Ariguanabo

During the first years of the Republic, in San Antonio de los Baños there was a musical development. Prominent teachers and musicians represented the town's artistic work. Today I propose to know about the Estudiantina Ariguanabo, a musical group represented only by men.

On August 17, 1916, the Estudiantina Ariguanabo made its first presentation at the Círculo de Artesanos, directed by José Manuel Paula. More than 20 talented young people from Ariguanabo made the show a work of art. Among them Rogelio Morales, Enrique Lemes, Olivio Valdés, Julio Hernández, Evaristo Rodríguez, Juan José Gutiérrez, Santiago de la Osa, Pedro Vega and Doctor José Hipólito Pazos y Caballero. The last was a renowned doctor and entomologist, who later served as head of the Health Department in the Village. In the magazine Punto y Coma, 1919, a photo of the members of the Estudiantina was published by Doctor Hipólito Pazos, who also had some skill in the art of photography.

La Estudiantina Ariguanabo, directed by José Manuel Paula, was a progressive musical group. It was made up of enthusiastic young people. A particular element of the Estudiantina was that its members were men. The first presentation in August 1916, motivated teachers and female representatives, including Carmela Romero de Lima and Ofelia Torres, to organize musical groups, revealing the progress, culture and civilization of this town, which since ancient times has maintained an important artistic tradition.
