Constitutional Reform Consolidates Cuban Democracy, Lawmaker Says

Cubans' participation in the consultation on the Draft Constitution reaffirms democracy on the island, the lawmaker from the People''s Power National Assembly Gerardo Hernandez said in Havana on Tuesday.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Hernandez, who is also the vice rector of the Higher Institute of International Relations (ISRI), noted that the debates on the document are unique in the world and represent an act of democracy that spreads in every neighborhood, work place and school. Hernandez highlighted the people's contribution to the drafting of the new magna carta that, if approved next year in a referendum, would replace the one in force since 1976.

For me, he pointed out, it has been reassuring to see that the top leadership of the country is determined to transform and adjust the Constitution to the new conditions of our society, as there are countries where no changes have been made.

'The previous law of laws is over 40 years old and since then until today, the country has undergone changes, so this draft is a newer and superior document,' the Hero of the Republic of Cuba and one of the five antiterrorist fighters who served lengthy sentences in US prisons, explained.

In addition, he noted the seriousness and responsibility of the statements made at the debates, which show the unity of Cubans in any tasks of the Revolution.

Regarding the Draft Constitution, he underlined the reaffirmation of the socialist nature of the political, economic and social system of the country, as well as the leading role of the Communist Party in society, principles that were ratified in the document and that the people have supported at the meetings.
