
Paris - Cuba reported advances on struggle against discrimination in education at the preparatory meetings of the 205th session of the Unesco Executive Council, informed today diplomatic sources.
In its condition of member state of the Council, the Caribbean nation spoke at the Committee of Conventions and Recommendation (CR), where Cuban ambassador Oscar Leon referred to the application of Unesco's normative instruments, especially the Convention on Struggle against discrimination in education.
Leon, representative of Cuba to the Executive Council and president of the Cuban National Commission of Unesco, highlights the different actions aimed at guaranteeing quality education for all, of universal and free coverage in all educational levels.
In that sense, he emphasized that 'the establishment of legal and juridical bases of education included in the Constitution of the Republic of Cuba creates the bases and develops the guarantees to not favor, promote or allow any form of discrimination in education'.
The Cuban representative also recognized the efforts made in the Latin American region regarding the World Convention to convalidate titles of higher education.
In this regard, he underlined the notable role of coordination by the International Institute of Unesco played in Latin America and Caribbean's higher education.
According to the diplomatic communiqué, special mention had Cuba´s international cooperation in the field of education.
'In this context, were recognized the programs developed to eliminate or reduce illiteracy as 'Yes, I can' 'Yes, I can go on' and 'Yes, I can read and write', methods that have contributed in many countries to reach literacy objectives, as well as a basic quality education for both young and adult education', indicated the text.
Cuba was elected member of the Executive Council for the period 2017-2021, reason why it participates in the 205th session starting today in this capital.
The island's delegation is headed by Leon, and formed by Cuban ambassador to Unesco, Dulce Buergo, as well as diplomatic officials of the Cuban National Commission of Unesco.
