ECO-School in favor of the environment

Artemisa, Cuba - "Generating an information movement in favor of the environment, responding to the country's communication policy" was one of the ideas pronounced by Dr. Raúl Garcés Corra, Dean of the Faculty of Communication at the University of Havana, during the words opening of the ECO-School project, in which Artemisa province had a great participation.
From 6 to 8 November, the first workshop of the program took place. Radio Artemisa, ARTV, the Provincial Section of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), the artemiseño newspaper, Radio Ariguanabo, colleagues from the provinces of Mayabeque, Villa Clara, leaders and other social actors, addressed journalism, sustainable development and the environmental situation in Cuba.
CITMA specialists in Cuba, the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences, FLACSO-CUBA, and professors from the Faculty of Communication were in charge of the conferences.
The first edition is based on a plan by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) for the training of journalists and focus on the local and community eco-journalism. The project is sponsored by the Chair of Information and Communication for Development.
According to the organizing team of the academic program, one of the objectives is to develop competencies for the monitoring and analysis of journalistic and scientific production on issues related to the promotion of sustainable development, which allow boosting eco journalism in the country, mainly in local contexts.

The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) issued a statement on Tuesday rejecting recent remarks by Peruvian-Spanish writer Mario Vargas Llosa, in which he blamed social outbreaks in the continent on Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and promoted an internal uprising in Cuba.

One of the actions, in correspondence with this objective, is aimed at exchanging ideas on the current perspectives of contemporary Cuban animation, which takes place at the International Film and Television School (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, from 9 to December 13th.

Havana - Cuban intellectual Abel Prieto was appointed president of Casa de las Américas, the center's website La Ventana reported today.
Prieto, former minister of Culture and currently serving as director of the Marti Program Office and president of the José Martí Cultural Society, was nominated for the post by Alpidio Alonso, current Culture Minister.
