Cuba: Diaz-Canel receives North Korean leader

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel received on Thursday Kim Yong Nam, President of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (PTC), who is making an official visit to Cuba.
During the fraternal meeting, the two leaders reviewed the excellent state of bilateral relations and their prospects for development, and agreed on the importance of maintaining and expanding high-level political dialogue. The Cuban President recalled with satisfaction his recent official visit to the DPRK and conveyed his cordial greetings to the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un.
Pak Tae Song, vice-chairman of the WPK Central Committee, Ma Chol Su, ambassador to Cuba, Ho Yong Bok, deputy foreign minister, and other members of his delegation accompanied the distinguished visitor.
On the Cuban side were Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla; the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Sierra Diaz; and the General Director of Bilateral Affairs, Emilio Lozada Garcia, as well as officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Party.
Prior to that meeting, Kim Yong Nam held official conversations with Salvador Valdes Mesa, first vice-president of the Councils of State and Ministers.

The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) issued a statement on Tuesday rejecting recent remarks by Peruvian-Spanish writer Mario Vargas Llosa, in which he blamed social outbreaks in the continent on Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and promoted an internal uprising in Cuba.

Havana - Cuban intellectual Abel Prieto was appointed president of Casa de las Américas, the center's website La Ventana reported today.
Prieto, former minister of Culture and currently serving as director of the Marti Program Office and president of the José Martí Cultural Society, was nominated for the post by Alpidio Alonso, current Culture Minister.
