Cuban Government Intensifies Support for Tornado Victims

Havana - The Cuban government is intensifying its support for the victims of the tornado that hit several municipalities in Havana on January 27.

More than 1,200 homes were affected, many of them destroyed, by the phenomenon that hit areas of the municipalities of Regla, Guanabacoa, Diez de Octubre and San Miguel del Padrón.

The meteorological event left four dead and nearly 200 injured, so the health system has been activated since the first moment.

The victims must have access to resources that the State has provided for recovery through offices of procedures that have been set up in the affected municipalities for the evaluation and attention of each case, according to the Ministry of Finance and Prices in the social networks.

Currently, resources are allocated to the construction of housing for people who were in shelters and these spaces were devastated.

Minister Meisi Bolaños announced the Government's decision that the State Budget should finance 50 per cent of the prices of construction materials that have already been marketed to those people who present total or partial destruction of their homes after the tornado.

A 70 per cent reduction in the retail prices of water storage tanks was also authorised.

People whose income is not sufficient will be able to obtain bank credits, subsidies and partial bonuses with financing from the State Budget, stressed the Ministry.

The Cuban government is in charge of organizing the arrival, the income without paying tariffs and the distribution of international aid for the victims and the work of recovery after the tornado, said the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment (Mincex) in its Twitter account.

Mincex coordinates international aid after natural disasters, such as the one that occurred last January 27. It is a well-structured process, which has been put into practice every time the country has gone through similar situations, she said.

Donations of material resources from outside the country, be it from governments, companies, non-governmental organizations or natural persons, can be processed through the Cuban embassies in the country where the donator is located.

The most important thing is to obtain the offer in advance through the Mincex or the embassies to guarantee its entrance to the country without tariffs and its distribution to affected people.

For cash donations there is an account in the International Financial Bank with the number 0300000005093523, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, said in Twitter. also, to support the people affected and the work of recovery of Havana was enabled email Esta dirección de correo electrónico está protegida contra spambots. In the case of Cuban peso contributions, the Metropolitan Bank has an account number 0598770003953216, explained Malmierca.
