Cuban Leo Brouwer Nominated to Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame

Havana, Cuba - Cuban guitarist, orchestra director and composer Leo Brouwer, was nominated recently to be included in the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame (Lshof), founded in 2012 to honor and acknowledge the work of the most important musicians of the region.

Along with other legends of this part of the world, the author of Un día de noviembre appears on the list in the category of composers, accompanied, among other figures, by Brazilian Erasmo Carlos, Chilean Alberto Plaza and Colombian Hector Ochoa.

Director of Cuban National Choir Receives Doctor Honoris Causa

Havana, Cuba - Master Digna Guerra, professor and director of the National Choir of Cuba, received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of the Arts (ISA by its Spanish acronym), in a ceremony that took its seat in that house of higher learning in this city.

In the presence of Abel Acosta, Deputy Minister of Culture, and Miguel Barnet, president of the National Union of Cuban Writers and Artists, the honoured tutor of generations of musicians, received this recognition for her hard academic work in the training of singers.

Cuba Inscribes Founding Documents in the World Memory Program

Havana - Cuba signed several legal documents of foundational character in the Memory of the World program, Unesco, founded in 1992 to preserve the documentary heritage of the world.

The Granma newspaper reports today on the income of the founding legal documents collection of the Republic of Cuba (1903-1934) in the Register of that program.

Presented in Cuba the Record A Full, of Luis Barbería

Havana - The Cuban musician Luis Barbería returned to his roots to present here his album A Full, a project dreamed for a long time and which is already a reality thanks to the record label Egrem.

Barbería made himself known 20 years ago with the group Habana Oculta, which became Habana Abierta, and also for his works in Spain with the Cubans Gema Corredera and Pavel Urquiza.

Cuba Celebrates Fernando Birri's 90th Birthday

Havana - Professors and students of the San Antonio de los Baños International Film and TV School (EICTV) are celebrating the 90th birthday of who was its first director and founder: famous Argentinian filmmaker Fernando Birri.

The celebration, entitled "Para un señor muy viejo con alas enormes" (For a Very Old Man with Enormous Wings), expects tomorrow, day of his birthday, the presentation of the Birri Museum project in the apartment he lived during his stay in Cuba, and later the performance of Big Bang Callejero group.

UNESCO Condemns Destruction of Nimrud Site in Iraq

Paris - The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) today condemned the destruction of the archaeological site of Nimrud in Iraq, while urged to implement measures to stop what it called deliberate actions against the cultural heritage.

Nimrud city, founded over 3000 years ago, was in days gone by a capital of the pro-syrian empire, whose frescos, palacies, and monuments are famous in the entire world, in the literature, and in sacred books.

The Los Cuenteros Puppet Theater Company  celebrated its 50th anniversary this November 19 at the Museum of Humor, located in San Antonio de los Baños, with the exhibition ''Fifty years telling stories''. The exhibition shows photographs, puppets and costumes used by Los Cuenteros in various performances since 1969.
