Tribute to Carlos J. Finlay for centenary of his death

A representation of the national scientific community will pay tribute on Friday to the Cuban scientist Carlos Finlay Barres (1833-1915), who discovered that the female Aedes aegypti mosquito was the transmitter of yellow fever.

Cuban professionals march on pilgrimage to the tomb of Finlay on Colon necropolis and deposited a wreath in memory of the man who drew up a plan as anti-vector only solution to eradicate the disease in the nineteenth century.

Cuban 5 Attend Freedom Charter Celebrations in South Africa

Johannesburg - The five Cubans who were imprisoned in the USA for fighting terrorism attend today an official ceremony on occasion of the 60th anniversary of the proclamation in South Africa of the Freedom Charter, a significant date in the country.
Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez arrived in this South African land on June 21, invited by the ruling African National Congress, to attend the celebrations for the anniversary.

Montevideo -Cuban President Raul Castro arrived here today to take part in the assumption orf president elect of Uruguay, Tabare Vazquez to be held this Sunday.

The delegation accompanying him includes Ricardo Cabrisas, vicepresident of the Council of Ministers and Roberto Morales, Minister of Public Health.

Havana, Cuba - Cubans Yuniesky Quesada and Isam Ortiz are the the players with the highest ELO among the more than 170 athletes registered for the Alajuela Chess Open, which began yesterday in Costa Rica.

The organizers reported that the event reaches its sixth edition and will include other Grand Masters as Moldovans Vladimir Georgiev and Nikola Mitkov, and Colombians Alder Escobar and Sergio Barrientos.
